IT’S OFFICIAL… Verry Elleegant is the winner of the 2021 Lexus Melbourne Cup. In a first for both trainer and jockey, Chris Waller completed the ultimate trifecta, now victorious in all three Melbourne Spring Racing Classics, whilst superstar jockey James McDonald steered his way to racing glory. Jumping from barrier 18, Verry Elleegant settled midfield before calmly working her way into prime positioning for a late surge to the line. The final two Flemington furlongs saw the mighty mare do just that, breaking away from the field to capture a monumental four-length victory – and in doing so, joined Gold And Black and Makybe Diva as the only Cup winners in the past 44 years to carry 57kg or more to victory. In a heartfelt tribute post-race, McDonald pledged the affinity he shares with his champion mare stating that “dreams do come true when you’re piloting superstars.”
