History was made at Phillip Island on Saturday afternoon, as Triple Eight Race Engineering star Jamie Whincup crossed the line ahead of every rival to score not only his 12th race win for the year, but also securing a record-breaking sixth V8 Supercars Championship. The win and subsequent Championship saw Whincup eclipse modern star Mark Skaife, racing legend Dick Johnson and 60’s champion Ian Geoghegan, all five-time winners of the Australian Touring Car Championship. The win, the 87th of Whincup’s career, sees him edge closer to Triple Eight team-mate Craig Lowndes in the continuing quest to become Australia’s first ever racing ‘centurion’ as well. Whincup’s pursuit of greatness may not be paralleled for many years to come, and while he continues his extraordinary streak of success, it appears the only person who may be able to surpass six Championships… is Jamie himself.
